At the heart of every hand crafted swing shop is some one who labors with love to create a fine, well-crafted product. Vintage porch swings is no exception. That’s why we are taking this week to spotlight a staff position that makes our porch swings so sturdy, stylish and, well, so easy to love.
Bill Clark is our Master Swing Builder. A position he has had full-time for almost four years, and part-time before that. Before, Bill had a long career in the home building industry. He worked with several Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island Builders (just outside of Charleston, SC) and eventually went to work with his brother at Second Wind Builders. He and one of the owners of Vintage Porch Swings (Vann) worked in home repairs for several years before he came on full time to build swings.
Bill spends his free time watching college football, especially when Florida State (his alma mater) is playing. He is known to cheer for almost anybody opposing the University of Florida. His other free time is spent refurbishing old Battery Benches. Bill is also a successful horticulturalist.
When Vintage Porch Swings staff was asked to comment on Bill’s character, Vann whole-heartedly responds, “Bill is dependable. If Bill Clark tells you something, you can take it to the bank. I have never know him to shrink from a responsibility, to complain, or to blame someone else for a mistake. He has steadfastly shown his determination to become one of the best carpenters I have ever known and that translates into a swing that is built as perfectly as possible.”
Everyone on staff knows that Bill strives to make every swing without one design or construction flaw. They are all overbuilt. Bill anchors the shop for us and when he is gone, the place is too quiet.
Thank you for what you do, Bill!
